A leader in healthcare quality in Canada, Ben was the inaugural CEO of the Health Quality Councils of Saskatchewan and Ontario and was named Canada’s Outstanding Young Health Executive in 2006.
The doctor, whose current work focuses on low- and middle-income countries, is a consultant for the World Bank, World Health Organization and foreign governments. His quality improvement projects in maternal and child health as well as primary care have spanned 15 nations and five continents.
In addition to teaching at the University of Toronto, he still pulls out his stethoscope occasionally to help at underserved rural hospitals.
Ben earned his doctor of medicine designation from the University of Toronto, his master of public affairs at Harvard and his master of public administration from Princeton.
The doctor is on a lifelong journey to master the six official UN languages. He’s fluent in English, French, near-fluent in Spanish and has used Russian, Arabic and Mandarin on official duties.
