Celebrating the heart of volunteerism

Volunteer Spotlight: Sheldon’s path of generosity

Volunteer - team believe

Volunteering embodies the essence of selflessness and community spirit, where people can dedicate their time and efforts to support causes close to their hearts. Volunteering not only enriches the lives of others but it can also provide a sense of belonging and purpose within you.

Take it from Sheldon, a dedicated volunteer with Children Believe. Sheldon is no stranger to the world of volunteerism, having lent a helping hand to various organization over the years. But his journey with us holds a special place in his heart. We had a chat with him where he shares his insights into the significance of volunteering, and the impact it has had on both him and the communities he serves.

Q: Was volunteering for Team Believe at the Marathon last year a fun experience for you and your son?

A: It was great! We had our little cow bells and we made signs that were encouraging runners to keep going and to help them be motivated. Especially towards the end of the run, you’re exhausted, to see someone with a sign or see a friendly face that you know cheering you on, pushing you for that last stretch is very encouraging for the runners. My son and I had a fun time because we weren’t just cheering on the Children Believe group but other people that were running as well too, to encourage them to finish that last stretch.

It was like being at a Toronto Raptors game, with a big crowd and you’re cheering on maybe 20 people that you do know and then another 10,000 people that you don’t know. The energy there and the support, the yelling, whistles blowing, it’s very live and high energy, especially early in the morning!

Q: Why was it important for your wife to run with Team Believe?

A: For her I know she always wants to support good causes, she loves being part of a team, and she loves running. It was something that she practiced in the past but now she’s taking it more seriously where she wants to compete as well too. And competing for a good cause just brings extra value to that whole day. She’s run with Team Believe before; she loves the team and community and how Children Believe supports their runners.

Q: Why do you think it’s important to volunteer?

A: I feel it’s important to volunteer first to give your time back to the community but also to support friends and family with some of their goals as well. By volunteering for the marathon, my son and I were able to cheer on the squad, help the team and show support.

I think that helps motivate the team as well, knowing that there’s someone at the finish line that’s there to cheer you on and see a visual of a person too. For me, I like giving my time and energy back to the community and to people, so I find value in volunteering.

Q: What motivates you?

A: Volunteering motivates me to give back to the community. It’s hard to get volunteers because people aren’t getting paid for the work and that can be challenging. But, when you have someone who can volunteer their time and wants to do it, it’s great for the community, it’s great for the people and I believe that it helps motivate others too.

Q: What would you say to others considering volunteering?

A: I would encourage others to volunteering because you may not know it but your presence there, volunteering, is helping support runners and Children Believe. Your time is valuable, and for you to volunteer your time shows your character. You’re willing to do a volunteer role without getting paid or expecting anything in return. It’s a great gesture.

Q: Is volunteering something you would continue to do in the future?

A: Yes I would, it just has to resonate with me. I wouldn’t just volunteer for anything because then I wouldn’t be committed to it. It has to be something that I enjoy, resonates with me, and something with a meaningful cause behind it.

Every moment matters in the realm of volunteering, as it serves as a cornerstone of community engagement, providing individuals with the chance to directly impact the lives of others. We’re so grateful for our volunteers like Sheldon, whose unwavering dedication and support make our mission possible. If you’re inspired to embark on your own volunteering journey, we invite you to join us. Whether it’s supporting our Team Believe or participating in other impactful events, your involvement holds the power to shape a brighter future for children and communities globally.

Let’s unite in embracing the spirit of volunteerism, and together, make a difference, one act of kindness at a time.
