Our Nicaragua team recently celebrated the launch of EMPUJE, a project aimed at addressing the gender gap and youth unemployment in the country.

With support through the Government of Canada, we’re providing opportunities for 12,000 young people, aged 15 to 30, to improve their life skills, well-being and job prospects. The five-year project aims to provide professional training, with an emphasis on helping women who face barriers to employment due to firmly held beliefs in traditional gender roles.

“I chose to take the great opportunity that EMPUJE is giving us to acquire more knowledge. We are taking classes online, and they are giving us different modules with different topics. What I’m studying right now will help me to have a better economic position in the future,” says Wendy Ruiz, a mother-of-two.

David Lopez, another beneficiary of EMPUJE, shares a powerful message to the youth about the project. “I invite young people to not give up on any idea they have of entrepreneurship… Because there is a power in (being) willing to try.”

There are many just like Wendy and David who are benefiting from EMPUJE and building a better life for their families and communities.

Take a look at how we’re tackling this youth unemployment issue in Nicaragua by watching our EMPUJE launch video below.

ABOUT CHILDREN BELIEVE (formerly Christian Children's Fund of Canada):

Children Believe works globally to empower children to dream fearlessly, stand up for what they believe in — and be heard. For 60 years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.

About ChildFund Alliance:

A member of ChildFund Alliance, Children Believe is part of a global network of 12 child-focused development organizations working to create opportunities for children and youth, their families and communities. ChildFund helps nearly 23-million children and their families in more than 70 countries overcome poverty and underlying conditions that prevent children from achieving their full potential. We work to end violence against children; provide expertise in emergencies and disasters to ease the harmful impact on children and their communities; and engage children and youth to create lasting change and elevate their voices in decisions that affect their lives.
