How is the world helping girls thrive?

One social enterprise is using a surfboard to help make a difference in Indonesia

We love to see girls being encouraged to dream big, and that’s the case in Indonesia where XX Surf, a surf school and social enterprise, is opening up a new world to so many.

“We want to empower [girls] so they know more about the outside world,” Dedi Susandra, XX Surf’s co-founder, told Thomson Reuters Foundation News, speaking of a society where many girls traditionally enter into child marriages, become young mothers and lead sheltered lives.

XX Surf offers surf lessons to tourists for a fee and gives local girls the chance to learn for free, while also donating part of their profits to educational programs.

At Children Believe, we help girls get equal opportunities, and we work with them to develop their knowledge, skills, confidence and leadership skills through clubs, child and youth groups and children’s networks.

ABOUT CHILDREN BELIEVE (formerly Christian Children's Fund of Canada):

Children Believe works globally to empower children to dream fearlessly, stand up for what they believe in — and be heard. For nearly 60 years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.
