World leaders recently gathered to reflect on major global challenges at the 11th annual Desmond Tutu International Peace lecture. During the event, Graça Machel, a Children Believe partner and founder of Graça Machel Trust, a leading women’s and children’s rights advocacy organization, highlighted the rising levels of violence against women and children in Africa, particularly South Africa. Watch the video here.

“My heart is heavy, and I speak to you from a place of anguish as I bear witness to the fate of adolescents and young women in South Africa, indeed across the globe,” Graça Machel began passionately, continuing on to highlight issues with sexual violence and bullying against women. She added: “More than 23,000 girls, aged under 18, gave birth between April 2020 and March 2021, and of which 934 were aged between 10 and 14.”

She went on to say that since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of teen mothers in South Africa increased to an alarming 60 percent.

At Children Believe, we support pre-natal care and safe deliveries through health education, we empower girls to speak up and protect their rights and strengthen social protection for girls.

Help empower girls and women today.

ABOUT CHILDREN BELIEVE (formerly Christian Children's Fund of Canada):

Children Believe works globally to empower children to dream fearlessly, stand up for what they believe in — and be heard. For 60 years, we’ve brought together brave young dreamers, caring supporters and partners, and unabashed idealists. Together, we’re driven by a common belief: creating access to education — inside and outside of classrooms — is the most powerful tool children can use to change their world.
