“My name is Deborah. I’m in Grade 8. For a long time, my school had no washrooms. If I needed to use one, I had to go to the open fields, which was not safe. Many girls were raped or assaulted, and others saw them naked. During my period, I had to stay home or beg to change at nearby houses. School washrooms change girls’ lives! Bad boys in the field threatened us. I was scared of getting pregnant and married off. One day, boys saw me in the bush and told others the colour of my pants. Embarrassed, I missed many lessons and worked on the farm. I wasn’t sure I could catch up and feared not finishing school.”
