“My name is Jérôme and our family has very little. I left school in Grade 4 to find a better life. My friends were doing well in the gold mines, so I joined them to try my luck too. I dreamt of helping my family. At the gold site in Côte d’Ivoire I had to beg for food, go weeks without a bath and felt scorned. I spent a year wishing to go home. One day, my boss, high on drugs, ordered us to leave without pay. Back home, my friends had passed their exams and I wanted the same. I wished to escape my shame, help my family earn money and return to school.”
