Every step counts: Why education shouldn’t be a hike

For children around the world, the journey to school is filled with challenges. But what if they could focus on learning, not just getting there?

In many parts of the world, and in the places where we work, children face daunting challenges just to reach the classroom. Long distances separate their homes from schools, forcing them to embark on journeys that aren’t always the safest. These treks, often taken on foot, expose them to various risks, from extreme weather conditions to encounters with wild animals and even potential threats from other individuals.

Despite these hazards, the desire for education burns brightly in the hearts of these children. They understand that education holds the key to a better future, not just for themselves but for their families and communities as well.

Consider the situation in communities where we work, most of children live at least two kilometers away from the closest school, without the luxury of school busses that many students in Canada have, to come and get them each morning.

For many girls, the journey to school can be more complicated by additional responsibilities, such as fetching water for their families before they even set foot in the classroom.

Monica, a young girl from Ghana, shared her experience, “I would be so tired from fetching water twice every morning before going to school. I’d get to school late, fall asleep in class, and get in trouble with my teachers. I always felt sad.

Just imagine a world where children can focus on their studies, without the burden of chores and long journeys.

With your support we’re working tirelessly to make this vision a reality. We are dedicated to breaking down these barriers and empowering children to pursue their dreams fearlessly by helping provide the support and resources to ensure that no child’s education is compromised by their circumstances. Like in Monica’s community, with your support, we were able to provide a new borehole. This mean that she no longer has to walk two kilometers for water and, instead, has time and energy to spend in class.

Be a part of our mission to create a world where every child is given the choice to learn, grow, and thrive. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of youth like Monica and countless others, helping them reach their full potential and write their own stories.
