Giving refugee women tools to succeed

A new social enterprise in London is giving migrants a hand up

LONDON — Women are helping women in London at Bread and Roses, a social enterprise training female refugees how to arrange flowers so their futures can blossom, reports Thomson Reuters Foundation News.

The women learn floristry while interacting with people and strengthening their English language skills.

Many, from countries such as Syria and Eritrea, are overcoming physical and/or emotional hardships and have children they must care for during the day. “Because of childcare and health issues, it’s very difficult for even part-time work — 15 to 20 hours a week is quite a big ask,” Sneh Jani, co-founder of Bread and Roses, told Reuters.

The enterprise gives these women a chance to take care of their children while learning a skill they can use or leverage to pave the way to another career. [news.trust.org]
