At dawn, Geetha begins the long walk toward the main road, her path winding through thick forest and rocky trails. Years ago, her sisters made the same journey, until marriage stopped their education.
"I saw my sisters married early, but my life is different. My parents now say education comes first. I have completed my degree. Our village becoming childmarriage- free makes us feel very proud," she says.
In Mosalamadugu, a small tribal and Dalit village deep in southern India, dreams like Geetha's were once unthinkable. Isolated by forests and poor roads, this community of 234 families had no school, no nearby health centre, and little clean water. Families lived in fragile huts on government land they didn't own. During monsoons, the dirt track connecting them to the outside world washed away completely.
Here, poverty meant walking kilometres for water, facing dangerous wild elephants at night, and sending children to distant schools on unsafe paths. "Before, we had no identity. No Aadhaar (official identification), no birth certificates. We couldn't access any benefits. Now, my whole family is registered, and we're getting rations and pensions," recalls Ananthamma, a mother of three.
For nearly a decade, Children Believe has worked alongside its local partner ROPES, supporting communities like Mosalamadugu as they reclaim their rights. The people here are leading the change themselves. Through village development committees, mothers' clubs, youth groups, and self-help groups, community members have organized to address their own challenges, with Children Believe providing resources and expertise to guide and amplify their efforts.
"In the past, girls were married off before they could finish their education. Now, our village stands together to stop child marriages. We want every girl to dream and succeed," says Bharathi, a committee member.
Today, Mosalamadugu stands as an example of community-driven transformation. Women run small tailoring shops and goat farms. Children study in safe learning centres, while mothers attend nutrition sessions and families gain access to healthcare.
Above: Every step to school marks progress — especially for young girls who once had to give up their education too soon.
In the most remote and hardest-to-reach places, families like Geetha's are doing all they can, but many kids still go without diverse and nutritious food, clean water, education, and safety. Children Believe evaluates the unique challenges in each community and collaborates with local partners to develop programs that offer the best combination of solutions to create the greatest change. Together, we help children go farther than poverty ever let them dream.
