Three Hens and a Rooster

Joséphine believes she can be a midwife. At 14, Joséphine’s small business success is proof of the power of animals to transform the future.
“My father’s farming income wasn’t enough to cover me and my sisters’ schooling, diet or health needs. But then, I was gifted five hens and a rooster. I’ve learned so much about breeding and selling hens. It has helped our family buy school supplies, pay medical expenses and buy three goats — which we’ve grown to 16! This also helped our family pay dues to repair the village borehole. My animals have helped me stay in school. I can’t wait to finish my education so I can help mothers and sisters in my village suffering alone to give birth, sometimes at the cost of their lives for lack of qualified health workers. I’m sure I’ll make my dream come true.”
