⌛Where Are They Now: Endeshaw’s journey from sponsored child to development and agricultural expert

When I was young, I experienced the harsh realities of poverty and limited opportunities. Living in a small village, I likely would have become a small farmer or daily laborer like many of my friends.

That’s why I truly believe that the sponsorship program was a lifeline for me, my family and the entire community. I received full support to finish my education, with school fees, materials and access to tutorial classes.

But I have to say, it wasn’t just about financial aid. Growing up, I remember celebrating Christmas, school days, and sports competitions with my friends, made possible thanks to my sponsor from Canada. I often wonder why someone from so far away would care for me to have done this, but I’m grateful beyond words.

Through Children Believe’s training programs and workshops, I learned about my rights as a child, inclusion, and non-discrimination. I was inspired to become a voice for others. After participating in the Children Believe sponsorship program for 15 years, I attended Jimma University, and now I am a Rural Development and Agricultural Extension Professional.

I have found fulfillment in serving my community as a government worker. I am married and my wife and son inspire me to continue to strive to start my own business someday. I want to create job opportunities for others like myself.

I’m proud to serve my community and it was all possible thanks to these opportunities and to have had the choice to pursue my education.
