Access to life-saving assistance and protection must be provided to migrants

Plight of itinerants recently recognized through International Migrants Day

As COVID-19 continues to spark challenges above and beyond the issues that cause irregular migration, displaced people and migrants are at the forefront of humanitarian need, as millions need support.

“Far too many migrants continue to face significant humanitarian needs with devastating consequences, with many taking life-threatening journeys, others excluded from essential services and critical protection, and yet more facing hostility and exclusion in countries of transit and destination,” Francesco Rocca, president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), said. “Governments have the duty to protect human dignity and save lives.”

There are many reasons for migration, such as a search for a better life, but thousands do so in dangerous, life-threatening journeys, with little to no support.

In Burkina Faso, we’ve helped displaced people who had to flee their homes — following radical armed attacks — by providing child-friendly spaces, funded by UNICEF. And, in South and Central America, we work with young people, providing them with the soft and hard skills to find and keep meaningful employment, so they don’t have to make a dangerous trek away from their homeland in search of a better life.

You can make a difference in the lives of youth seeking a better life in their own community by contributing a Vocational training and business startup gift through our Gifts for Good catalogue. You’ll help young people overcome barriers to employment and promote youth entrepreneurship ventures.
