3 positive steps toward building more sustainable water systems in Ghana

Providing life’s basic essentials, such as water, is key in Children Believe’s journey to help children access education to change their future. And, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently highlighted how this vital resource is being accessed in Ghana, one of our core countries of operation.

The situation has been grim. “Though the country has made significant progress in ensuring access to clean water, nearly three-million people rely on surface water (which is not safe for drinking) to meet their daily needs,” reads a recent report from UNDP, written by Angela Lusigi, a UNDP resident rep in Ghana. “This leaves them vulnerable to water-related illness and disease.”

The good news is Angela highlights three areas that signal positive change is underway. She notes the following…

  • There’s growing interest in planning and governance for integrating water resources and raising public awareness about how to manage it.
  • There’s a national goal to manage water sustainably with techniques such as irrigation, wastewater recycling, rainwater harvesting and more.
  • Investment in water can help girls and women, so they can go to school and grow up to contribute to the economy rather than spending hours collecting water for their family daily.

Children Believe has been working in Ghana since 1996, ensuring sponsored communities have access to clean water, so their children — girls and boys — can dream about a brighter future. We work with local partners and national government to help children and families access their rights.
